Thomas GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Thomas GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Bef 1519 - If I am right in guessing that Thomas was the father of John, then he is not likely to have been aged less than 25 when John was born, and that is not likely to have been after 1544.
Again, if I am right about Thomas being John's father then Thomas could have been many years older.
Gender Male Died (probably), Rydon, Wolborough, Devon, England
- Probable place of death IF I have the right burial
Buried 7 Jun 1572 St. Mary the Virgin Church, Wolborough, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 19 Nov 2014)
"Junii Septimo die Sepult fuit Thomas Gotham de Rydon"
There were two other burials that month, in both cases a father was named, suggesting that this burial, which didn't, was probably of an adult and not a child.
Notes - A Thomas married an Agnes in Wolborough in 1560. If Thomas was not the father of John then that could be a marriage of this Thomas.
No children of the marriage seem to have been baptised in Wolborough, so if the marriage was childless then it may be that the John I suggest was a son was actually a brother, cousin or nephew and farmed with Thomas and / or took on the farm after Thomas's death.

Married - I am guessing that John was the son of Thomas since Thomas was 'of Rydon' when he died and John's son Thomas was 'of Rydon' when he brought a case to the Court of Chancery.
Rydon was a small detached part of Wolborough Parish, now there appears to be a single farm in the area.
It would be good to find out more about the area, whether it might have had several families or just one household there in the past.
If the latter then it clearly increase the chance that John was Thomas's son. It is possible, of course, that Thomas died childless and another relation took on farming there.
