Susan
Set As Default Person -
Name Susan Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1580 - Date estimated from my estimate of dob of daughter Mary, based on Mary's date of marriage. However, as this family were better off than most Susan may have married younger than average.
Susan may have been born a Sharpham, sister of Edward, who described her husband as 'brother-in-law' in his will. However, since there was no bequest or even mention of Susan I suspect Edward was Richard's brother-in-law in a different way.
Gender Female Rate From 1640 to 1649 Abbotskerswell, Devon, England
Poor Rate - Susan appears as Susann(a) Gotham widow (or, on one occasion, as Jotham).
Court 1641 Court of King's Bench, London, England
Accused of trespass Residence 1651 Whiddon, Abbotskerswell, Devon, England
- Susan was of Whiddon at the time she wrote her will
Died 1651 (probably), Abbotskerswell, Devon, England
- Susan was of Abbotskerswell when she wrote her will.
Will 28 Mar 1651 Written Probate 21 May 1651 Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London, England
Probate Buried - There is a gap in Abbotskerswell PRs with no burials recorded between 1645 and 1659, so if, as seems likely, Susan was buried in Abbotskerswell in 1651 there will be no record of it.
Notes - (Research):I have added most beneficiaries mentioned in Susan's will showing my best guess of their names by birth and marriage, but it should be noted that there are other possibilities, as noted in notes attached to each daughter, etc.
One person I have not added is Leonard Herson, for whom the link is particularly unclear, as no relationship is mentioned in the will, nor is any other Herson mentioned. I suspect he was a grandson of Susan's, in which case how he acquired the surname Herson is similar to the case for granddaughter Susan Tozer.
Hopefully more research with online resources, seeing the PRs and possibly BTs and ultimately looking for other sources (such as manorial records) should clarify the situation.
One thing worth noting is that although a Martha Gotham (of Abbotskerswell?) married a Robert Tozer, this marriage was some years after Susan wrote her will, so Susan Tozer could not be a child of this marriage.

Family Mr. Richard GOTHAM, b. Est 1578, d. Between 1615 and 1640 (Age ~ 37 years) Married - Without Penelope's baptism there was no clear evidence that the Richard having children in East Allington was the husband of Susan who was linked to Whiddon in Abbotskerwell.
Penelope's baptism shows that Richard and Susan were married to each other. The baptism was outside the usual Gotham area, but in an area with which Richard had a family link through the Coles - his maternal grandmother was Margaret Cole and she appears to have inherited land in Buckland Toutsaints, a small parish adjoining East Allington.
This link of Richard to the area makes me confident it was this Richard who was the father of Penelope / husband of Susan.
