    Married
    • Without Penelope's baptism there was no clear evidence that the Richard having children in East Allington was the husband of Susan who was linked to Whiddon in Abbotskerwell.
Penelope's baptism shows that Richard and Susan were married to each other. The baptism was outside the usual Gotham area, but in an area with which Richard had a family link through the Coles - his maternal grandmother was Margaret Cole and she appears to have inherited land in Buckland Toutsaints, a small parish adjoining East Allington.

This link of Richard to the area makes me confident it was this Richard who was the father of Penelope / husband of Susan.

Family SLANNEN,   d. Yes, date unknown
    Married Est 1632
    • Estimate from date of baptism.
It is, though, possible that Richard and Susan had more than one daughter Elizabeth, and / or that she married earlier or later than typical for young women of her class (could have married any time between 1625, assuming born 1613, though this young was exceptionally rare, and 1651, the year her mother wrote her will). Also, I have nothing to indicate that 'Slannen' (Slanning?) was the surname of Elizabeth's first husband.
