    Notes
    • A Sophia Thomas was in East Teignmouth with 9 year old George in 1841; could this Sophia have married her sister Sarah's widower or at least been living with him as his wife?
I think it probably was this Sophia and her nephew. I have found no other evidence of anyone else who could be the Sophia with the 9 year old George, nor anyone else who could be the youn George. I have also not found any other census record or fate for Sophia and George before the census.
    • (Research):A Sophia Heath married a George Thomas in Exeter in 1835, but the 1851 census appears to show she was born in Kingsbridge, so probably not this Sophia.
The Sophia who married in St Marychurch (Newton Abbot RD) in 1839 was recorded as the daughter of Robert Heath, so does not appear to be this Sophia.

      "William Heath and Mary Gotham"
No parish shown in the banns register for either of the couple; was the priest just slack about recording the information (the name of the person who published the banns is also missing), or does this imply both were otp?
Married 27 Oct 1806  St. Thomas’s Church, Exeter, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Although there were banns of marriage for William and Mary in West Teignmouth in 1806, their marriage took place in Exeter a few months later, with both of them shown as of the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle.

Perhaps there was an impediment, hence marrying in a city parish, where they were not known.
An impediment could also explain why a daughter of Mary's (Sarah), shown in the register as born more than 7 months after the marriage, was recorded as a Gotham and illegitimate.

I show Mary's other daughter who was baptised as a Gotham as having a different father, but she could have been a daughter of William Heath.

Family George THOMAS,   d. Yes, date unknown
Other Partners: Sarah GOTHAM  m. 23 Aug 1829
    Married
    • Since I think Sophia was living as a Thomas in 1841, with her nephew George, son of her sister Sarah, I show her partnered to George Thomas. A marriage between them was not allowed, as it would have been within the prohibited degrees, but when a woman died leaving children looking after what more natural that a sister might move in to look after them? This often led to marriages, but if the priest or Parish Clerk realised the situation they are unlikely to have allowed it, which may be why there seems to be no marriage of George senior to Sophia.
If they had managed to marry before a change in the law in 1835, then the marriage would have been treated as legal, if not challenged when both were living; from the change in law in 1835 all such marriages contracted before that date were legalized, but all contracted after were to be invalid!

I have yet to discover what became of Sophia, or of either George, her partner or nephew, after 1841.
