Notes - Who was niece Mrs H. A. Emmerson?
(in his home he died)
It seems his 'niece' was really his wife's niece, the daughter of his wife's brother Archibald, Mary Cousland, otherwise Mrs Harry Alfred Emmerson.
For a few years Thomas' sister Ann lived in Victoria, and her children were born there, but they returned to England between 1874 and 1881. With Thomas marriage being a short one, his wife dying after no more than 7 years of marriage, and his sister returning to England, it is good to know he had some family in Australia in the form of his wife's niece and her children.
Mary had at least 4 children living, in the year of Thomas' death they were aged 13 to 25, so the oldest may have left home. - (Research):Not with his mother and siblings in 1851 (when he would have been aged about 17), may have been at sea - or already living in Australia.

(Age ~ 27 years) Married 1859 Victoria, Australia
- From the Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950 (Thomas Gotham to Mary Reid Cowsland )
Described as 'of Liverpool' when his wife died, and this Thomas died like Mary in Victoria (parent's names at death registration show this), hence I am confident the marriage was this Thomas. (Also, no further records for him in England)
