With father and son dying just a nine days apart I thought it would be the same cause, but it seems an unluck co-incidence. Phthisis usually meant TB, while his father died of bronchitis and pneumonia.

      Also from notices in newspapesr:
'On Monday, August 13, at Fenton Church, by the Rev. W. Sollis incumbent, Mr. Mathew Gotham, compositor, of Liverpool, to Miss Eliza Simcock, of Fenton.'
(in the Staffordshire Sentine 18 Aug 1860, p.5 col. 6)

Very similar in The Albion (pub. Liverpool, Mon 20 Aug 1860)

It is interesting that Matthew married a Simcock; John, who I believe was his older 1st cousin, had married a Simcock in 1838. These 2 Simcocks, Eliza and Elizabeth, appear to have been sisters. Especially given how far Matthew lived from his cousin and where Eliza was from, about 50 miles away, it is impossible to believe this was due to chance and points to the two brothers and their families, i.e. that of William in the Stoke-on-Trent area and Thomas in Liverpool, kept in touch.
