The 1851 census has a John GOOHAN who I think is this John. He is with sisters Margaret and Jane; Margaret fits the other information for a Clitheroe born Margaret and apart from birthplace Jane fits the one who married John Mayoh. With John and Margaret the only Gothams with a clear link to Clitheroe even before taking account of the 1851 census it seems probable that they are close relations. No other record that could be either of them has been found in the 1851 census.
It shows John as born Ireland, like his mother, rather than Clitheroe, like his sisters. Aged 7 at the time of the census, it would seem he was in England by the age of about 4 when his sister Margaret was born, and might have come to England so early in his life as to have no memories of Ireland and deliberately or accidentally claimed Clitheroe as his birthplace.
Name of mother from the 1851 census. This shows her as unmarried. I suspect the father named on John's marriage certificate, like himself a groom named John Francis Gotham, was an invention to hide the fact he was illegitimate.
