    • A notice appeared in the Liverpool Evening Express on 21 May 1943 (p.1, col. 4):
      "On the ground of desertion by his wife, Jessie Gotham, a decree nisi was granted in the Divorce Court, today, to Matthew Gotham, of Pugin-street, Kirkdale, Liverpool, thre being no defence to the suit.
      The couple were married in April, 1924, at Toxteth Park, Liverpool. The husband's case was that they spent the first week at the house of his wife's brother in Sutler-street, Liverpool, but not liking that arrangement he discussed with his wife their having a home of their own. She said she preferred to stay where she was and the husband went back to his parents to give her time to think it over.
      On two occasions he provided accommodation for himself and his wife but each time she refused to leave the brother's home."
      (I suspect Sutler-street should be Butler Street, where Jessie was living at the time of the 1939 register, although no brother was then present)
