William BUSSELL
Set As Default Person -
Name William BUSSELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1797 Mamhead, Devon, England
- From the 1851 census where shown as aged 52 and age at death as recorded in burial register (59)
Baptised 15 Mar 1798 St. Thomas the Apostle’s Church, Mamhead, Devon, England
Gender Male Apprentice From 1828 to 1829 Ashcombe, Devon, England
Parish Apprentices appointed to William - William was expected to take poor children who were apprenticed to him by the parish:
1828 - Philip Stear (indenture in the DHC, ref. 462 A/PO 112)
1829 - George Merchant (indenture in the DHC, ref. 462 A/PO 122)
There were 2 earlier apprentices to a William Bussell, farmer of Ashcombe, but these may have been to an older William -
1817 - Samuel Elliot (indenture in the DHC, ref. 462 A/PO 91&92)
Tithe Apportionments 1840 Ashcombe, Devon, England
- William Bussell was shown as the occupier of an unnamed house etc. in Ashcombe of 125.0.16 acres, owned by Sir Robert Newman.
Residence From 1841 to 1857 New House Farm, Ashcombe, Devon, England
- His home in the 1841 census and at the time of his death, though in1851 he wa living at Broom House Farm.
In the 1841 census in addition to William and his two sons there was in the household also an Emily aged 15 (rounded down age, so could have been up to 19) and a second young William, aged 11. I don't know how these two were related to William.
A separate household at the farm were 2 female servants, Elizabeth and Maria Lemon, the former aged 40, the latter 13, and four young ag labs: James Farley (15), William Burch (15), James Quantic (13) and Joseph Quanti (10).
Will 18 May 1857 Written Died 22 May 1857 St. Thomas Reg Dist, Exeter, Devon, England
- Date from gravestone
GRO ref: Bussell, William q2 1857 St Thomas RD 5b 56; GRO online index shows age at death as 59
Buried 26 May 1857 St. Nectan’s Church, Ashcombe, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 18 Dec 2014)
"1856. William Bussell No. 268., abode: Ashcombe, When buried: May.26., Age: 59., Wy whom the ceremony was performed: W: H: Palk Rector."
The abode of Ashcombe I don't believe indicates he died in the village rather than on a farm at Broomhouse or Langdon Barton; all the burials around this time seem to record just the parish name.
Probate 12 Jun 1857 - Transcription to be added.
Occupation New House Farm, Ashcombe, Devon, England
Farmer
Siblings2 brothers and 1 sister Patriarch & Matriarch
Notes - (Research):Family residence:
Broomhouse, Ashcombe - 1830 when Willam's wife died
New House Farm, Ashcombe - 1841 census (William, his sons and 2 other Bussell children)
unnamed - 1840 tithe commutation (William the occupier)
Broom House Farm, Ashcombe - 1851 census (William and his sons)
New House, Ashcombe - 1861 census (after William's dth, home of his son Wm H)
It looks as though 'New House' and 'Broomhouse' may be alternate names for the same place. Looking on modern maps, Broomhouse Farm is shown in Ashcombe; about a mile away (as the crow flies) is a New House Farm but the 1851 map showing parish boundaries shows this to be in Mamhead parish. William was from Mamhead - did he give the name of where he grew up to his farm in Ashcombe?
