Margaret TEGIN
Set As Default Person -
Name Margaret TEGIN Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1796 Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales
- Between 1791 and 1803 from the 1851 census where shown as aged 48 and age in death registration index of 66; shown as aged 37 when she married in 1842, implying born about 1805!
Baptised 7 Oct 1796 St. Deiniol’s Church, Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales
- From PR entry (imag on FMP)
Shows Margaret Teggin, daughter of Robert and Mary
"7th Margaret Dr. of Robert & Mary Teggin _ Farmer [wife's maiden name] Jones, [township] Ewloe"
Gender Female Also known as Bayant MINSHULL Occupation 1841 Blundell Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Female Servant in Boarding House - There was only the boarding house keeper Mary Tegin and 2 other Tegins (possibly Mary's children) in the house besides Margaret at the time of the census. Although Margaret was about 45 her age was given as 30; I expect Mary, recorded as aged 40, was her 50 year old sister.
The combination of a Minshall (Margaret's first married name) with Tegins (her maiden name), and the household being in Blundell Street, where Margaret's later husband died in 1847, and where Margaret herself was running a boarding house in 1851 and where she died a few years after that, point to it being this Margaret, despite the age being quite inaccurate.
Residence 1842 Chester, Cheshire, England
- According to her marriage PR entry
Occupation 1851 76, Blundell Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Boarding house keeper - Margaret had a 'nephew', name given as 'James Gotham' with her at the time of the census. I think this was probably James Gotham Potter, a nephew of her late husband; the age is right and James Gotham Potter was shown as resident in Liverpool when not at sea when issued with a seaman's ticket two days before the census.
Besides them there were 14 lodgers present, and 3 servants. Four lodgers appear to have been entered as a separate household, but may well have been provided with lodgings by Margaret as it appears there may have been a misunderstanding - 'head' seems first to have been written by one, and then crossed out and replaced by 'lodger'.
All fourteen lodgers were mariners, one was aged 55 but all the others were in their 20s, and they came from all parts of the UK: from Devon in the South-West to Folkstone in the South-East, across to Ireland and up to Scotland and the Shetland Isles in the North. One wasn't born in the UK but in Nova Scotia. The servants were also from widely flung parts - one born Liverpool, one Ireland and one Demerara.

Notes - (Research):The age discrepancy (1851 census and age at death) could indicate I am muddling two Margarets, but if so there is a strange absence of data regarding them, so I think it indicates either a deliberate mis-representation or that who ever supplied the data on one or both occasions was not well informed.

Only the one son found, looking in Flintshire and Denbighshire baptism record sets on FMP, making it seem likely that they had not been married long when Samuel died. This marriage in 1827 of a Margaret Tegin to Samuel Minshull therefore fits well.

Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 18 Apr 2017)With Richard dying before 1851 we lose the possibility of working out who he married by finding him with his wife in the census of that year.
Sometimes where this happens it is possible to exclude brides by finding other couples. However, Hurstwick doesn't really seem to exist as a surname - and I haven't worked out what it is a version of. Certainly there are no William Hurstwicks in the census. With Ellis Roberts the problem is the opposite - there are hundreds. Too many to look through, and in any case there must be Ellis Roberts who had wives with each of the Christian names above. I haven't even looked at Samuel Williams - there are bound to be loads.
The other way of identifying Richard's wife short of seeing the PR entry or marriage certificate is to find a reference to his widow.
I have been able to attach most Gotham BMD events in Liverpool to a tree on this website quite easily (most are descendants of the Thomas Gotham who was married to Susannah Carr or wives of descendants). One that I hadn't identified was the death of a Margaret Gotham in 1857.
It seemed to me likely that this was Richard's widow so I looked for Margaret Minshull in the censuses.
This is when I realised that a widower [sic] Bayant Gotham in the 1851 census was living at 76 Blundell Street - the address given for Richard at his burial. He was a publican there, but Bayant was a boarding house keeper - usually a woman's occupation. I believe Bayant was actually Margaret, a widow. I can see how Margaret could look like Bayant (images will be added to show this) and might have been mis-recorded by the enumerator. Although Bryant is a name (male) Bayant is not; although I might be mis-reading Bayart the 'Bay' part is clear. 'Bayant's' birthplace was shown as Hawarden, Flintshire. Hawarden is only about 5 miles from Northop, where Richard was buried; in fact, the closest parts of the parishes are little more than 2 miles apart. In addition, it was hard to explain the birth of a Gotham in Wales with a nephew born in Teignmouth, with no sign of that birth / the parents. I can see that a mariner from Teignmouth might have settled in the Hawarden area, and a child returned to stay with grandparents in Teignmouth and married and had children there, or even returned with a wife and had children there - but there should be PR entries for them. A widow makes more sense.
In 1841, before Richard's marriage, a Margart Minshull, an 'F.S.' (Female Servant) was living in Blundell Street, rounded down age shown as 30, not born in Lancashire. She was a servant in a boarding house, a good preparation for running one herself later. The slight discrepancy in her age may be due to a small mistake in 1851 or to her claiming to be a little younger than she was in 1841 - or the head of the house getting it wrong (the 1851 census suggests her age should have been recorded as 35 in 1841).
