Mary Ann WOOD
Set As Default Person -
Name Mary Ann WOOD Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 14 Jul 1851 Tipton, Staffordshire, England
- Shown as born Tipton in the 1861 census, where shown as aged 9, Bilston in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.
Approximate date of 1851 from age in 1871 census, given as 19 (although age given as 22 when she married 2 months earlier - probably to avoid the need for parental consent) and 1881 census, given as 29. The US 1910 census, though, shows Mary as born 1855.
Actual date from the baptism register. Marriage certificate and baptism register name her father as William Wood, latter also gives her mother's maiden name as Mary Stranton [sic].
Bilston is in Wolverhampton Registration District; Tipton in Dudley RD. No Mary Ann Wood births registered there in Wolverhampton RD in 1851, but there was one in Dudley RD which fits with the parents.
GRO ref: Wood, Mary Ann q3 1851 Dudley RD 18 330; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Stanton
Baptised 3 Aug 1851 Holy Trinity RC Church, Bilston, Staffordshire, England

Gender Female Occupation From 1861 to 1871 Potters gilder Emigration 1888 USA
To / Arrival - I suspect Mary Ann emigrated with her son Thomas and daughters Gertrude, Mary Elizabeth, Rose and Emily. (I have seen evidence for all these children except Gertrude in US records)
I suspect husband William Henry Gotham emigrated too, although he died in England in 1900.
The 1900 census shows that Mary Ann emigrated in 1888, the 1910 census shows 1910. Daughter Mary Elizabeth, not with her mother and sisters in 1900, is also shown as having emigrated in 1888 so this seems the most likely year. (Son Thomas shows 1896 in the 1920 census, though he had adjusted his age by 8 years, so I don't think this date can be relied on).
Residence 1941 Trenton, Mercer Co., New Jersey, USA
- When her son Thomas died
Died Aft 1941 USA
- Found in the 1940 census and shown as living in her son Thomas's obit; I assume she died in the USA

The family seem to have emigrated to the USA in about 1886 or 1887 (1888 according to 1900 census, 1886 according to 1910 - entries for Mary Ann, but their first child to be born in the USA was born 1887 so it has to be by then).
I am assuming they all went although William Henry died back in England in 1900.
Mary Ann was also inconsistent with the number of children she had mothered, the 1900 census showing 5, while the 1910 census shows 10! (Her age means she cannot have had 5 between 1900 and 1910). Both show she had 4 living. Did she think the question referred to the number who had emigrated to the US? i.e. did William and Mary Ann have 3 more after arriving? I think this is possible, though the number of living suggests that if they did all died young (they would have been born between 1888 and 1900, but all dead by 1900)
