Elizabeth (“Bessy”) SALE
Set As Default Person -
Name Elizabeth (“Bessy”) SALE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1833 Burslem, Staffordshire, England
- From the 1861 census where shown as aged 27, although possibly 1832 as the next three censuses show her as aged 38, 48, 58.
Elizabeth's maiden name and parent are a bit of a mystery. Although recorded as 'Steel' at marriage with a father named 'Wm Steel', a potter, her maiden name was recorded as Sale when the birth of each of her three children was registered.
With 3 uses of the name Sale and just one of Steel it may be that the priest or parish clerk filling in the register made a mistake. Elizabeth made her mark so we can't see how she recorded her name.
It could be that she was born Elizabeth Sale, and her mother then married a William Steel, and Elizabeth was using the surname of her father or step-father rather than her birth surname when she married. There was a marriage of a William Steel to a Matilda Sale in Wolstanton in 1835, but William was a tailor and not a potter, and there is no Elizabeth with them in either the 1841 or 1851 censuses.
An Elizabeth Steel was baptised in Burslem in 1834, the daughter of James and Mary. Could William have been a mistake on the marriage certificate? Even if so, not only is there no obvious reason for Elizabeth to be shown as a Sale on 3 occasions, but James was shown as a crate maker (1841) and a labourer (1851), not a potter.
If there was a mistake in her surname, given that it seems more likely it was Sale, there was also a baptism of an Elizabeth Sale in Burslem in 1834, daughter of John and Elizabeth. However, this Elizabeth was still with her widowed mother in 1861, unmarried, so she cannot be the one who married George.
I think that Elizabeth was probably born Elizabeth SALE to a couple William and Ann SALE; William is shown as a potter in the 1841 census, and at the time of the baptism of the two of his daughters whose baptisms I have found.
Although ages were shown as just 36 and 38 in 1841, the oldest child with them was shown as aged 18; because relationships are not shown in the 1841 census he could have been e.g. a younger brother of William, but if a son then it suggests they married young (and of course the ages may not have been accurate). A potter William Sale did marry in Stoke upon Trent in 1820, to an Ann Austin. I suspect these were Elizabeth's parents.
Gender Female Occupation 1881 Laundress Died Jun Q 1908 Wolstanton Reg Dist, Staffordshire, England
- After 1901 as in the census of that year (with daughter Martha); unmarried then so very unlikely to have married.
This therefore seems to be her death (the only one of an Elizabeth in the Midlands to be of the right or a close age)
