  • Name Mary Ann GOTHAM
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Dec Q 1852  Burslem, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • from the 1871 census where shown as aged 18
GRO ref: GOTHAM, Mary Ann q4 1852 Wolstanton RD 6b 90; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Sale
    Gender Female
    Occupation 1871
    Potters Assistant
    Illness From 1881
    Fits / Lunatic
    • The 1871 census does not record any problem with Mary's health in the column for such information, but in the 1881 census 'Fits' was recorded in the column for indicating if a person was deaf-and-dumb, blind, an imbecile or idiot or a lunatic. No occupation was given, but whether this was due to her health issues or because she had a 5 month old baby is not clear. The 1891 census records Mary as a 'Lunatic from Childhood', although she was still living with family.
Residence 1881  12, Brook Side, Burslem, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • With her mother and baby daughter at the time of the 1881 census.
Although the relationship of her baby is only shown to the head of the household, Mary Ann's mother, since both of Mary Ann's sisters were married before Martha was born, and Mary Ann had no brothers, the baby must have been hers.
Maybe her fits had put the child's father off from marrying her, or had left her open to abuse.
Residence 1889  The Wolstanton and Burslem Union Workhouse, Chell, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • At the time her son Ernest was born; possibly she was just there briefly for the birth.
    Occupation 1889
    Domestic Servant
    • Recorded as such at the time her son was born, but it is not clear if she ever worked again.
Residence to 1900  65, Sneyd View, Burslem, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Given as her address when she died, presumably it was where she was living at the time admitted to the asylum.

    • Perhaps a worsening of her problems, maybe an increased frequency of fits, led to her being admitted to the lunatic asylum in 1900. There at the time of the 1901 census, she died there in 1903.
(information from lunatic asylum admission register, viewable on Ancestry)
