However, he was then shown as aged 21 in the 1881 census, 32 in 1891, and 43 and 53 in 1901 and 1911 respectively, the last two pointing to a birth in 1857 or 58. Assuming the birthplace of Burslem is accurate and that the birth would have been reigistered in Burslem sub-district, then there were three possible births between 1857 and 1862 - in 1858, 1859 and 1860. Looking for marriages with the bride having the mother's maiden name, there were 2 that could have been the parents of Thomas born 1858, neither father was John (the name of this Thomas's father in his marriage PR entry). No obvious marriage for the parents of the 1860 Thomas, most likely his mother married a Mountford as a widow. The 1859 Thomas does seem to have had a father called John, and as this is the only Thomas of the right sort of age with a birthplace of Burslem and father John to be found in the censuses I think he was almost certainly the son of John and Jane. It is interesting to note that (unsually) even as a child there was a discrepancy over his age in the censuses. Shown as aged 1 in 1861 (indicating born 1859 or 60), but 13 in 1871 (suggesting the birth was 1857 or 8)!
