Elizabeth Jane NEWCOMBE
Set As Default Person -
Name Elizabeth Jane NEWCOMBE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Mar Q 1852 Walkhampton, Devon, England
- From the censues: birthplace shown as Plymouth in 1891 and 1911, but Walkhampton in 1901. Shown as aged 40 in 1891 (b 1850-1), 48 in 1901 (b 1852-3) and 59 in 1911 (b 1851-2).
GRO ref: NEWCOMBE, Elizabeth Jane q1 1852 Tavistock RD 5b 315; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Main
Two versus one might favour Plymouth, but the specificity of a small rural parish versus the vagueness of the city in which the family was living suggests to me Walkhampton is the more likely. In addition, with two possible birth registrations, the more likely by date would suggest Walkhampton. (The other, in Stoke Damerel RD in 1849, suggests a birth not strictly speaking in Plymouth - the 'three towns' had not been united at this time).

, d. Jun Q 1922, Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England
(Age ~ 75 years) Married 9 Jul 1871 Charles Church, Plymouth, Devon, England
- About 1870 from the 1911 census where shown as having completed 40 years of marriage, having had 5 children of whom, tragically, only 1 was still living (clearly must have been their daughter Elizabeth Jane who was living with them at the time of the census)

If like daughter Elizabeth Jane the other children were born and died in Sheppey Reg District then possibly the children of James and Elizabeth are:
a male, born and died q1 1886;
Beatrice Victoria, born q1 1887 and died q2 1887
Albert Edward, born q2 1890 and died q4 1890
Although there were quite a few Chandler children born in Sheppey RD from 1880 (15 between then and 1891), there was none between 1871 and 1879. It seems probable that James and Elizabeth would have had children born in this period, in which case they must have lived elsewhere, possibly Plymouth where they married, or possibly in several different places.
