Middle name relationship After his father's step-father
    • Named after his father's step-father, taking both his first and surnames as Christian names.
Sometimes a name / middle name appears to be honouring the person after whom it is given, but in this case the large number of children with a wide variety of surnames as middle names suggest Richard's parents liked these sort of names, and there need not have been a strong reason for giving it.
However, Richard's father Samuel was born posthumously, so his step-father would have been he only father he had, although his mother had only remarried when Samuel was aged 13. Samuel's step-father died just two months before Richard's baptism. I think it probable that Samuel was acknowledging what his late step-father had done for him in giving the name to a son.
