A report of the Coroner's inquest appeared in the Liverpool Echo of Mon., 31 March 1952 (p.5, col. 8):
"Dead in Chair
Police officers who entered a house in Avondale Road, Southport, found George Rowland, aged 61, unemployed tool maker, who lived alone, seated in a chair in front of a gas stove from which gas was escaping. He was wearing his hat, coat and muffler and had been dead for some days from coal gas poisoning.
Recording an open verdict at the inquest at Southport to-day, Mr. C. Bolton (the Coroner) said on the evidence he did not feel justified in returning a verdict of suicide.
"There was plenty of coal in the house and the man could have made a fire. On the other hand, he was in his outdoor clothing and may have wanted to warm himself in front of the stove," he said."
