    Hotel Owner and Manager
    • The detailed address is from the 1930 census, which shows the 'township or other division of county' as Justier Precinct 8. This is the same as in the 1920 census, but there is no more detail there; whilst the incorporated place in 1930 is given as Putnam none is given in 1920. It seems likely that Mary was managing the same hotel in the same place, but that Putnam had not been incorporated by 1920. That she was in Putnam is made more likely by her husband being shown as 'of Putnam' in Jan 1919, although he was not there at the time of the 1920 census (possibly having moved due to them divorcing).
Although the 1940 census also does not name the hotel, Mary's nephew Louis Doucet named her on his WW2 draft registration, dated 1941, which shows she was still at the Mission Hotel.

Wikipedia only shows populations for Putnam from 1930. Whilst in 2010 there were just 94 people, in 1930 there had been 601.
In 1930 census there were 6 boarders and one lodger staying at the hotel, all men, ranging in age from 28 to 70. Of these five had occupations connected with an oil field - 2 drillers, a drilling contractor and 2 stationary engineers working on the oil pipe lines. The other 2 staying were a carpenter (general practice) and a lineman (electrics work).

The family seem to have emigrated to the USA in about 1886 or 1887 (1888 according to 1900 census, 1886 according to 1910 - entries for Mary Ann, but their first child to be born in the USA was born 1887 so it has to be by then).
I am assuming they all went although William Henry died back in England in 1900.

Mary Ann was also inconsistent with the number of children she had mothered, the 1900 census showing 5, while the 1910 census shows 10! (Her age means she cannot have had 5 between 1900 and 1910). Both show she had 4 living. Did she think the question referred to the number who had emigrated to the US? i.e. did William and Mary Ann have 3 more after arriving? I think this is possible, though the number of living suggests that if they did all died young (they would have been born between 1888 and 1900, but all dead by 1900)
