James KELLY
Set As Default Person -
Name James KELLY Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1832 Co. Roscommon, Ireland
- From the 1861 census where shown as born 'Ireland, Roscommon' - not clear if this refers to the town or county. Simply shown as born Ireland in the 1871 census, and with his age given as 40 (rounded?).
Near James and his family in Dark Street in 1861 was another Kelly family, that of Patrick and his family. My first thought was that this was chance - 28 year old James was born Roscommon, 33 year old Patrick in Mayo. However, the two counties are adjoining and so it is possible that the family had moved very little, and they were just born either side of the border. Patrick's father is shown in his marriage record (church register) as Anthony KELLY. Unfortunately the church register with James' marriage did not include many particulars and it would be necessary to buy a copy of the official registration to see who his father was.
(As I am only looking at this family to put Ann GOTHAM née KELLY in context as part of the Gotham One-Name Study I do not plan to investigate this further).
Gender Male Also known as James KELLY Residence 1851 Anchor Yard, Lower Rushall Street, Walsall, Staffordshire, England
- Besides 20 year old James one of the other lodgers was 32 year old Michael Kelly. I guess he was a relative of Michael's, likely a brother but possibly a cousin.
Two Michael KOUGHs were also living in the house. Unlike James and Michael they were shown as relatives of the head of the household, Patrick Breheny - his father in law and brother in law. Whilst these descriptions have several possible meanings it seems most likely that in this case they mean they were the father and brother of Patrick's wife, Mary. This is more-or-less confirmed by there having been a marriage of a Patrick Brahanay to Mary Keogh in Walsall (in St. Mary's RC Chapel, as it was then) in 1849.
Whether one of the Michael KEOGHs was a wtiness because they had become friends through living in the same house, or whether James and Michael KELLY were living in the house because they were related as well, if more distantly, I don't know.
Occupation Iron worker - Recorded when his daughter Ann was married
Occupation 1861 Stone miner Occupation 1871 Coal miner Occupation 1892 Coal miner - Recorded when his daughter Ann was baptised / received into the church in 1892 (this may reflect what he had been, and not necessarily mean he was still living).
Died - Probable death:
GRO ref: Kelly, James q1 1889 aged 56 Walsall RD 6b 454
Notes - Ann's fathers name was recorded as William Kelly, an iron-worker when she married, but as James Kelly, a miner in the baptism register, when she was received into the church as an adult.
The reason for this discrepancy is at present unknown. One possibility is that she was illegitimate and invented a father on each occasion.
The different occupation as well as name suggest that this was probably not simply an error by the priest entering the data in the register on one of the occasions, but it could be that one man was her father, the other a step-father.

Details from church register entry (image on FMP, viewed 26 Aug 2023)
Since only CofE clergy could be registrars at this time for marriages in their church, James and Bridget would have had to have had a registrar present, and the full (and original) entry with all the details will be in the local Register Office, with copies obtainable from it or a copy of the GRO copy from the GRO. The church register does not give marital status, occupations, ages or names of fathers.
