    • At the time of the 1891 census Elizabeth was living with Lionel, described as his sister. However, she appears not to have been sister, half-sister, sister-in-law or step-sister.
      So were they trying to hide an unmarried relationship?
      Lionel appears to have been a bachelor and as a widow Elizabeth could have remarried, so if they had been living as man and wife it is not clear why they wouldn't have married.
      Maybe the reason was financial, perhaps Elizabeth would have lost her annuity if she had remarried.
      Or maybe it was a platonic house sharing, but one which would have caused gossip in Victorian England, and so a relationship was pretended.
