  • Name Thomas WOOLDRIDGE
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Abt 1818  Hanley, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Date from the 1851 and 1861 censuses, where shown as aged 32 and 42Place shown in the 1861 census (most entries approximated to 'Stoke' on the relevant page in 1851)
    Gender Male
    Occupation 1851
    Labourer
    Occupation 1861
    Labourer at Colliery
    • Just shown as labourer in 1851, possibly the same job.
Shown as formerly 'crate maker'(?) in 1871.
I can see that crate makers worked in the potteries, but I can't find a reference to crates being used in the mines, so maybe Thomas changed to working for a pottery before he went blind and could no longer work.
    Disability From 1862
    Blind
    • The 1871 census shows that Thomas had been blind for 8 years, but the 1881 census says 21 years. Since there was no mention of blindness in 1861 I think it more likely that the 1871 census was correct, although of course losing his sight may have taken place over several years and so both may have been correct.
Died Jun Q 1885  Shelton sub-district, Stoke on Trent Reg Dist, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Based on his age, on not finding him in censues after 1881 and his abode in 1881 I think the following is probably this Thomas:
      GRO ref: Wooldridge, Thomas q2 1885 aged 65 Stoke T. RD 6b 115
Local BMD (Staffs index for 1885): WOOLDRIDGE, Thomas aged 65, sub-district: Shelton, registers at: Stoke-On-Trent, ref: SHE/49/008

Other Partners: Charles GOTHAM  m. 6 Aug 1836

    • From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 26 Nov 2014)
      Shows
Thomas Wooldridge of age, Bachelor, labourer, residence Chell, father Thomas Wooldridge, Joiner
      married
Ann Gotham, of age, widow, no occupation given, residence Chell, father Samuel Cartlidge, a Miner
Married after Banns by Charles Hill, Curate
Thomas signed, Ann made her mark, witnesses Sarah Hulme and Charles Cartlidge both made their mark.  GRO ref: Wooldridge, Thomas to Gotham, Ann q3 1846 Wolstanton & RD 17 294
Local BMD entry (from Staffs index for 1846) - indexed twice:
CARTLIDGE     Ann      WOOLDRIDGE     Thomas      Wolstanton, St Margaret     Newcastle-Under-Lyme      C30/4/46
      and
GOTHAM     Ann      WOOLDRIDGE     Thomas      Wolstanton, St Margaret     Newcastle-Under-Lyme      C30/4/46
(since the copy of the marriage register entry would not be expected to be any different in the local reigster office, presumably the entry showing Ann as a CARTLIDGE is based on her father's name)

Although the PR entry gives Ann's father's name as Samuel CARTLIDGE, not BOAR(D)MAN I do think it was this Ann who married Thomas as there is a Thomas and Ann WOOLDRIDGE in the 1851 census with a 'son' Matthew, aged 13. Although shown as a WOOLDRIDGE, this Matthew is the right age to be the son of Charles and Ann GOTHAM. In addition there are no more children shown until one aged 4, i.e. soon after the marriage of Thomas WOOLDRIDGE and Ann GOTHAM.

There is no other sign of an Ann GOTHAM with a son Matthew in the 1851 census.
Unfortunately so far I have not found them in 1841 either, as this could give futher clues.
