    • From the 1871 census where shown as aged 21 and born Bersted, but shown as born Binsted in the 1881 census. Bersted in 1891 and 'South Bersted' in 1901 clarify that the error was in 1881.
      No birth registration found for Sarah as a Messenger or variant, but I think this is her:
      GRO ref: Boniface, Sarah q1 1850 Wt Hampnett RD 7 599; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Brown.
      Although she married as a Messenger and her first 3 children were recorded with a mother's maiden name of Messenger, the other 6 were recorded with a mother's maiden name of Boniface.
      I have not researched why she took the surname Messenger - perhaps it was that of a stepfather.
