Thomas GOTHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Thomas GOTHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1640 - Based on estimate of dob of his (probable) son and inclusion in 1664 hearth tax book.
Possibly the Thomas baptised in Bishopsteignton in 1628.
Gender Male Tax records 1664 Bermondsey, London, England
Hearth tax - A Thomas GOTHAM is listed, shown as having 4 hearths. Bermondsey is very close to Rotherhithe (1.5 miles from the points selected by Google maps for each place), and I have yet to see an appropriate parish map but I think in the late C17th they would have been neighbouring parishes. It therefore seems reasonable to think that the Thomas listed in the hearth tax was probably the one buried in Rotherhithe in 1688.

Thomas is amongst those listed under the ambiguous heading "PERSONS NOT ASSESSED IN THE POORES BOOKE ".
Not assessed for tax because they were were in the poor book OR no assessment in the poor book to show whether or not they should be considered poor? (The hearth tax was to be paid by those who paid poor rates).
Those listed with Thomas under this heading had mostly 1 to 4 hearths, with a good number with 3 or 4. Compared with other (more rural) listings I have seen this is unusual, and a couple with a larger number of hearths were noted as new to the area.
but a second list for Bermondsey headed "[PERSONS
CHARGEABLE] " shows a number with 5 or 6 hearths, and a few with more, although plenty had 1 to 4.

Notes - In 1776 Fielding noted Rotherhithe as "chiefly inhabited by sailors" - was that true in the C17th? Was Thomas a relation with links to East Kent?
Possibly a son of Richard and Katherine (née Rider) that I haven't discovered? I think it unlikely their son George would have squeezed in a son old enough to be this Thomas. I have seen no evidence of other Goatham families in Kent who were having or may have had children at the time range during which this Thomas is likely to have have been born.
Or was he a son of a London Gotham? -
I don't think he can have been a son of the John Goatham from Herne who was apprenticed as a vintner in 1645; IF John had any children (and I have no evidence that he did) they would not have been old enough to be a householder by 1664, when Thomas was listed in the hearth tax rolls.
So was he from the Devon Gothams, where there were lots of Thomases and quite a few sailors? This seems most likely - and as noted in his birth note one in particular seems likely.
