William Joseph DAVIES
Set As Default Person -
Name William Joseph DAVIES Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 13 Apr 1888 Leggs Lane, Normacot, Staffordshire, England
- GRO ref: PUGH, William Joseph q2 1888 Stone RD 6b 42; GRO online index does not show a mother's maiden name, implying he was illegitimate.
Details from birth certificate (from GRO) which confirms he was illegitimate. Name of father was entered as Henry Walker, though this was then struck through, probably when the reigistrar realised William was illegitimate. (I have checked, there were no births of Walkers in Stone RD that quarter, so it is unlikely to have been copied by mistake from another birth.
Following written before obtaining birth cert, some now no longer relevant (to be updated):
Shown as aged 3 in the 1891 census as William Potts, where listed after George and Mary Potts, with relationship to the head of household shown as 'son'. George was not the head of household; his wife's step-father William Davies was. However, I think it is clear that the relationships shown against two Potts children, William and George, in the census means to George, not William (else the surname Potts makes no sense), though whether either or both of the sons was the son of William Davies or just of Mary is not clear. Both were born before George and Mary married; Mary Potts was William Davies step-daughter, and had the maiden name Pugh, and it was with that surname that both of the boys' births were registered. By 1901 George and Mary were no longer living with her mother and step-father, but William remained with them, suggesting he may not have been George's son. (However, it was far from unknown at this time for legitimate children to live with other family members for a variety of reasons, so it cannot be assumed that George did not want William because William was not his son).
William shown as 12 in 1901, now as a Davies and as the son of William and his wife Hannah. At the time William junior was born Hannah was aged about 35, her daughter Mary about 17 and both had the surname Pugh so either could have been the mother. Since William senior was already living with the family by 1881 he could have been the father (whichever woman was the mother). The 1911 census does at first seem to suggest that William junior was the son of William and Hannah, since they are shown as having had one child, still living, and there is no apparent sign of any other. (George and Mary are shown as having had 11, 7 of whom were still living - and 7, including George junior, so they were probably counting him, but clearly not counting William). However, although William junior was shown as son of William and Hannah in 1901, he was shown as grandson in 1911! Could Mary have been the daughter of William and not of Hannah's husband Thomas Pugh? The 1871 census when Mary was aged 8 months shows that Thomas and Mary were still together and William Davies was not a lodger of neighbour so there is nothing to suggest she was, so this one child is mysterious, but the family information requested in the 1911 census was often completed incorrectly so it may just be that Mary was being counted although only Hannah's daughter.
