    Cotton weaver
    • From the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses
    Died
    • I have not found a death registration index entry with strong evidence suggesting it is this John William Crowther, so don't know whether or not he died before Emma remarried, i.e. did they part company or was she effectively widowed?
Looking for a JWC born Shawforth in censuses after 1901 does show a John Crowther bc 1866 born Spotland and married to Esther Ann. However, it is clear they married in 1893 and were together in 1901 so he can be ruled out.
Excluding this John, there is not entry which appears to be this John in the index on FMP for 1911 or 1921 so he may have died.

    Married Bef 1900
    • John and Emma were living as man and wife at the time of the 1901 census. The reason they had not actually married may have been because Emma's husband Butterworth Gregory was still living (and divorce not readily available).
The birth of their son George William had been registered the previous year by Emma alone, who gave her true name at that time, and John was not mentioned on the registration (he would have ahd to be present for that to happen), but George was with John's mother by the time of the 1911 census.
