Although there were other Chappell = Smith couples, none seem to have been having children in this area at this time. Although the births of their earlier children had been registered in Hanley sub-district the birth of their subsequent daughter was registered in Burslem. Also, it seems likely James and Fanny would have had at least one child between Fanny in 1854 and Mary Ann in 1862. There seems to be no baptism record, but as they did not get around to having Fanny baptised until after Mary Ann had been born it seems probable that Eli was not baptised or was baptised at home when dying (and then his baptism could easily have been accidentally omitted from the register). Perhaps more surprising if Eli was the son of James and Fanny is that he was buried in Burslem rather than Bucknall, where most of the family were buried.
