- Described as being aged 60 at the time of his execution in 1854, quite likely approximate but other articles roughly agree. In 1818 he was said to be about 20, but in 1821 about 25.

The John who was executed was then of Warrnambool, about 170 miles from Unwin's Special Survey, on the outskirts of Melbourne, where he had been living in 1848, so it is not immediately clear that it is the same John. I have not come across clear evidence, but I think the following circumstantial evidence supports the assumption that it was:
1. In the account of his execution mention is made of him having formerly lived in Flinders Lane, Melbourne. It is therefore not unreasonable to suppose he may also have lived in Templestowe and married in Campbellfield.
2. In the reports concerning his trial in 1854 and execution mention was made of him being previously tried for murder in 1844; the report of that case shows that his wife was Jane.
3. The violent behaviour of the John who lived in Unwin's Special Survey and John in Warrnambool seems consistent with them being the same person.
4. John Gunn and Jane Spring were married by a Presbyterian minister and John of Warrnambool was said to be from Scotland, so that it is most likely he was Prebyterian.

The entry shows that it was a Prebyterian marriage, in the Port Phillip District of Melbourne.
It seems that John and Jane had a number of children but as births were only registered from 1853 it is not easy to identify them, with the exception of John who was buried with Jane and her second husband.
