An inquest followed Mary's death, as was reported in the papers:
"Coroner's Inquests.
before mr. clarke aspinall, coroner of liverpool.
On the body of Mary Ann Gordon, wife of Charles Gordon, slater, who lives at 15, Butterfield-street. Deceased, who was given to drinking, had been imbibing heavily for a week, and died on Wednesday morning. Dr. Fisher said that death had resulted from natural causes, but it had at least been accelerated by the drinking habits of deceased. The jury found a verdict accordingly."

A similar report appeared in The Liverpool Daily Post (p.6, col. 5) of the same date, under the dramatic heading 'Slain by Drink' - the report included an inquest for another woman who had death was more clearly directly caused by drink, dying of delirium tremens. This report claimed that Mary [Ann] had been drinking heavily for 'the last few weeks', not just a single week.
