  • Name Rachel GOTTAM
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born Abt 1820  Ellenhall, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Between 1816 and 1821 in Staffordshire according to the 1841 census, where her rounded down aged was given as 20; about 1820 from the 1851 census which records her age as 30, and the 1861 which gives 39. Death registration and burial both give 43 - but she wasn't around to correct!
Shown as born Eccleshall in 1861, but place shown as Ellenhall in 1851. The family were living in Eccleshall parish so many would have been born there; most likely the ennumerator in 1861 was a little careless and misread the similar name as the one he expected.
Baptised 18 Jun 1820  St. Mary’s Church, Ellenhall, Staffordshire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

Oxleasows is just 2 miles from Eccleshall so Rachel would have been able to visit her daughters there when she had free time.

    Notes
    • Why part of the Go(a)tham ONS?
Although Rachel's surname was recorded as Cottam when she was baptised and as Cotton when she married, the records I have for her 4 illegitimate children show them were recorded as Gottom or Gottam at baptism or birth, and as Gotten or Gotham at death and / or burial, with one exception. The exception is a death registration for John, which gives the name as Goffin, but as he was buried as John Gotten I think this an error.
In addition, at the registration of the birth of her first child after her marriage to David Summerfield her maiden name was given as Gottam, although it was Cotton or Cottam for their other 4 children for whom a birth registration has been found.
