    • Although probate was granted at London, John's brother Daniel swore the oath to well and faithfully administer etc. before the Vicar of Plymouth, so that he did not have to travel all the way to London. It is not obvious why the will was proved in the PCC rather than a local church court.

    • From PR entry (image on DFHS website, viewed 23 Apr 2016)
"Ellis Bickford and Johane Gotham were maried the viith of November"
Year not clear - 2 entries (one in Nov, then two in Feb) headed 1568 AND 1569!
I suspect there was none in 1568 so the heading 1569 was then added (i.e. 1569/70).
(No entries after these three until 1576). Too early for BTs.
    Offspring
    • Although Ellis and Johane appear to have married in 1569/70, there are no baptisms in the PRs there for their children until 1576, after which 5 follow with mostly small gaps. With no fertility problem is seems likely there were children born (and baptised) during the period 1570-1575.
In 1626/7 one John Bickford of Coffinswell left a will, proved in December 1628, in which he named siblings Richard, Doraty, George, William, Alice and Daniel. With four names, and not the most common names (Richard, Doraty, George and Daniel) matching those of four of the five children of Ellis and Johane I think that the John and the other siblings named were probably also children of Ellis and Johane.
Of course, it is possible that there was another family using the same name because they were family names, but there is no sign of such a younger family nor of the burials of an older one in Coffinswell so this does not seem likely. Another possibility is that Ellis had been married before he married Johane and one or more were children of that earlier marriage, but given the gap with no births / baptisms known it seems more likely they were born in the 1570-1575 gap. John remembers the poor of Mary Church (as well as of Coffinswell) in his will; maybe he was born there - no records of baptisms there survive from the C16th.
