    Married
    • * This marriage / Edward's wife may not have existed *
In Edward's will he described Richard Gotham as his brother-in-law.
'Brother-in-law' could, in theory, indicate one of several links:
      - They could have been what we would call step-brothers. However, what I know of the parents of Richard, and what I have read of the parents of Edward, seems to preclude this on this occasion.
      - Richard could have been married to Edward's sister (or half-sister). With Edward's family living in East Allington Richard may have received land there in a marriage settlement; that could explain why he and his family lived there. However, Edward left no bequest to a sister. I would have thought he would, if she were living, so if Richard had married Edward's sister I suspect it was not his wfe Susan but an earlier marriage..
      - Edward could have been married to RIchard's sister or (half-sister). Edward mentions no wife or child in his will, so may well have died a bachelor, but could have married and been widowed with no children from the marriage, or at least none who survived him. (The brief biographies of Edward I have seen do not mention any wife, but given that the records may well not survive I do not believe the possibility can be ruled out.)

I have linked Edward to Richard as per the last possibility, rather than leaving him unattached, to make Edward more obvious (both to me and to anyone else interested in this family).
