"Joane the wyfe of Laurence Underhil and their daughter unbaptized weare buryed 17 Octob:"
Notes - (Research):Who was Jone and where was she from?
Given how well off her husband was (he left bequests of £800 to each of his daughters in 1625) she was presumably from quite a wealthy family. She may well be mentioned in wills that have 'survived', either a PCC will or one that was transcribed or abstracted before 1942. However, without knowing a surname it is impossible to know where to start searching wills.
I did think Lawrence may have been armigerous and so a visitation record may name his wife, but there is no 'Underhill' visitation. Neither is there any visitation which shows a daughter marrying Lawrence Underhill. Bequests to Sampford Courtney in his will suggest that is where he was from, and the no. of wills of Sampford Courtney men listed in the DWP, but all seem to die later that Lawrence, and given that Jone had pre-deceased him I can see no reason why they might mention her or give any clue to her origins.
The two most likely places that Jone may have been from would seem to be
1. Exbourne, given that she married there - a neighbouring parish to Sampford Courtney, which could increased the chance of friendship between her family and Lawrence's, but it could also have been there because of Lawrence's link to the area.
2. Aveton Gifford - did Lawrence acquire property in Aveton Gifford as part of a marriage settlement when he married Jone?
It could be that Jone had links to both (or neither) place, but as she may have, or come from near them:
Exbourne: an index to a book about Drewsteignton, the book not yet seen, names two Gothams present there in the C17th. If this is correct (and not, for example, the mis-transcription of a similar name, it is well away from where most Gothams lived but not too far from Exbourne. Could these Drewsteignton Gothams be relations of Jone's first husband? It is even possible that the Richard Gotham present in Drewsteignton at some time in the C17th was Jone's first husband, though I think it more likely that the other Gotham mentioned, Kate, present in 1666, was his wife.
Aveton Gifford: The Gothams had few links to the South Hams around this time, but one family that did was that of Alexander Gotham. His wife's family had links to Buckland tout Saints, and his son Richard lived for some time in East Allington, both near Aveton Gifford. Was Jone's husband part of this family - possibly another son of Alexander? Even if not his son a close connection to Alexander would seem likely, as these seem to have been the wealthiest Gothams at this time, and the only family I know of of sufficient status that I think Lawrence's wife would have been likely to marry into.

Family 1 GOTHAM, d. Bef 1606 Married - I don't know if Jone and her Gotham husband had any other children, but I have seen the will of her subsequent husband and he does not name any step-children, unless a step-daughter had married and is named amongst the 'Cozens' left bequests.
Children 1. Mary GOTHAM, b. Bef 1606, bur. 2 Oct 1609, St. Andrew’s Church, Aveton Gifford, Devon, England

"Laurence Underhill and Jone Gotham widow were marryed the xxxith of July."
Aveton Gifford PRs only survive from the early C17th, with baptisms only from 1614. BTs survive from 1608, there were no Underhill children baptised in Aveton Gifford 1608-9. but the BTs for 1610-1613 do not survive.
Hence we do not know of other children who may have been born to Lawrence and Jone. A couple of documents listed on Discovery show there was a Lawrence Underhill of Exeter around this time; I do not know if it was this Lawrence before moving to Aveton Gifford; if so there could have been children baptised there. None found by searching on FMP, but not all PRs survive / are indexed there. Given that the children known to be of both of them, still born in 1613, Mary in 1615, and another who died around the time of birth in 1616 suggests they were quite fertile, there are likely to have been several children born 1607 - 1612, probably at least 3, so it seems reasonable to suppose that Lawrence and Julyan may have been theirs. However, Lawrence was married by 1627, so must have married young if he was Jone's son.
