Dr. John Vertner GUYTON
Set As Default Person -
Name John Vertner GUYTON Prefix Dr. Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 19 Jul 1881 Frankfort, Alabama, USA
- Date from WW1 draft registration, which also names his wife; date also on his gravestone and death certificate. Towards the end of his life he seems to have become uncomfortable with his age, as he claimed to be aged 53 in the 1940 census, and consistent with this to have been born in 1886 when he registered for the WW2 draft.
Parents named on his death cert.
Gender Male Occupation From 1900 Medical Doctor - Though aged only 18 he was shown as a physician in the 1900 census.
Occupation Mar 1901 Marietta, Prentiss Co., Mississippi, USA
Medical Doctor - It seems strange now but in 1901 John could practice as a doctor whilst still at college, and aged only 19.
So before going back to college it was reported he was to work with his 'uncle', Dr. Warren.
"Dr J. V. Guyton and a Mr. Priddy came over from Marietta, Miss., last week and spent a few days in town Dr. Guyton has accepted a position with his uncle. Dr. Warren. at Marietta, and will practice with him until time to go back to college, this fall. We wish him much success."
(from Marion County Democrat, pub. Hamilton, Alabama, 22 Mar 1901, p. 5, col. 2)
His paternal grandmother was a Warren, so Dr. Warren may have been a great uncle, or a cousin of his father's, rather than a simple uncle (I have not investigated).
Occupation 1907 C. B. Gunn’s Drug Store, Decatur, Texas, USA
Physician and Surgeon - John was advertising in the Wise County Messenger, the advert showing that he had an office in the Drug Store.
Occupation 1919 Putnam, Callahan Co., Texas, USA
Medical Doctor - - John was described as "successful and prominent physician and surgeon of Putnam, Texas" in an advert of the Mid-Texas Oil Company. The Company was selling shares, having bought much land where there was believed to be oil to discover.
As one of the trustees of the Company John's description of his abilities may be his own, rather than another's!
Occupation Abt 1919 Trustee of Mid-Texas Oil Company - A number of Texas men, including John, had spent a great deal of money to secure leases of land where they expected to find oil - John was one of these.
John W Woods, a lawyer and business man from Abilene was to have management of the company, while the four trustees included John.
