Personal Information    |    PDF

  • Name Julyan UNDERHILL
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Between 1607 and 1612
    • Date assuming she was the daughter of Jone, and not Lawrence's daughter by a previous marriage, as seems probable. Lawrence's will, written 1620, implies she was then under the age of 16, so she would have to have been born about 1605 if she was his by a previous marriage.
Can't have been born later than 1612 as she married 1625 and the minimum age was 12 and a brother was born 1613; however, she is extremely unlikely to have married this young, probably at least 15 i.e. born 1607-10.

"Laurence Underhill and Jone Gotham widow were marryed the xxxith of July."
Aveton Gifford PRs only survive from the early C17th, with baptisms only from 1614. BTs survive from 1608, there were no Underhill children baptised in Aveton Gifford 1608-9. but the BTs for 1610-1613 do not survive.
Hence we do not know of other children who may have been born to Lawrence and Jone. A couple of documents listed on Discovery show there was a Lawrence Underhill of Exeter around this time; I do not know if it was this Lawrence before moving to Aveton Gifford; if so there could have been children baptised there. None found by searching on FMP, but not all PRs survive / are indexed there. Given that the children known to be of both of them, still born in 1613, Mary in 1615, and another who died around the time of birth in 1616 suggests they were quite fertile, there are likely to have been several children born 1607 - 1612, probably at least 3, so it seems reasonable to suppose that Lawrence and Julyan may have been theirs. However, Lawrence was married by 1627, so must have married young if he was Jone's son.

"John Quicke, gent: and Julian Underhill weare maried the xxixth day of September."
Vivian shows 'Juliana' as the daughter of 'Lawrence Underhill', citing the PRs for the marriage info, although they do not name her father! Hence, source for this link unknown, though it does seem likely. Both families seem to be at a similar social level, and there can't have been too many eligble Julian Underhills. In addition, a son of Julian's married a daughter of Thoms Southcott of Buckland tout Saints, i.e. of a neighbouring gentry family to Julian when she was growing up.
