If I am right and the death and burial record are for a William Thomas GOTHAM then who was he?
Quite a number of GOTHAM CMB events have taken place at St. Mark's, Shelton, some from the family of William from Devon and his wife Sarah née LEES, including the burial of William himself 4 years later, but also of members of the GOTHAM family long resident in the Srhops / Staffs border area.
A couple of things make me think he was most likely (but by no means certainly) the son of Charles and Anne:
1. Charles and Anne had married in Aug 1836, but the only other child of theirs I am aware of was not born until July 1838. It is likely they would have had a child before this.
2. The name fits well, since Charles was the son of a William and his oldest brother was Thomas. Whilst that would be true for Charles' siblings, there doesn't seem another likely to have had a GOTHAM child then. Sister Elizabeth was alredy married, the next surviving sister was probably too young. Brothers were unmarried or had another chld too close to William.
3. The surname spelling was also used for the birth of Matthew, the same workhouse governor being the informant for that event as well. Matthew's birth registration names his parents as Charles and Ann. If the family were in the workhouse in July 1838 when Matthew was born, they could still have been there in Dec when William died. Since Charles died the following summer he may well have already been ill and unable to support his family as a result.
Gender Male Died 19 Dec 1838 Spittals Workhouse, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England
Cause: Inflammation of the trachea - GRO ref: Gothing, William q4 1838 Stoke on Trent RD 17 125; GRO online index shows age at death as 2
The GRO register entry shows that the death was registered by D F Colclough, Governor of the Spitals Workhouse on Dec 20. Unfortunately the 'rank or profession' field which for a child usually names the father was left blank.
Gothing can be a misrecording or mistranscription of Gething, or a misrecording of Gotham, or a German name! Given the time / location the German name seems unlikely. The Staffordshire BMD website which indexes the local registers also has the spelling as GOTHING so I don't think it an error when the GRO copy was made. Probably an error due to the informant bein the workhouse governor, rather than a family member. Although I have found no baptism to fit William, there is a burial of a William Thomas GOTHAM just 3 days after the death, but no death registration for this name. Hence I think in this case GOTHING was a misrecoded GOTHAM.
