Annie HOWARD
Set As Default Person -
Name Annie HOWARD Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1863 Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Gender Female Residence 1871 Artillery Street, Liberty of the Old Artillery Ground, Whitechapel, London, England
- Annie, aged 8, was with her mother, who claimed to be an annuitant and widow.
They formed one of the seven households at no. 1 Artillery Street, a total of 35 people.
Occupation 1881 Kings Arms Hotel, Philip Lane, St. Mary Aldermanbury Parish, City of London, London, England
Kitchenmaid - Shown in the census as servant to the head of the household, manageress, widow Eliza Brikill. Also present were a barmiad, cook, waitress and a potman. No guests / visitors were listed.
Residence 1891 26, Gun Street, Spitalfields, London, England
- Annie was here at the time of the census, and it is also shown as her abode when she registered her son's birth.
With her mother living in this 15 room house. (It is shown as a 'Double House' in the census, with no. 27 shown as uninhabited - dooes that indicate the two had been combined?)
They were not, though, living in luxury. Another ten households were living in the same house, a total of 38 people, a few households having 2 rooms, most just one (but two rooms for a family of husband, wife and seven children must have been more cramped than one room for one or two people - especially when the oldest child was 23).
Annie and her mother Mary shared a single room, and about 3 months after the census had to share it with Annie's baby as well.
Residence 1901 45, Cyprus Street, Bethnal Green, London, England
- With her 'husband' and two sons.
The family are living in the same house as Lithographic Printer Charles Skinner and his family (wife and three children).
The first son, born William Howard, is recorded with the same name as his step-father, and I suspect Annie was not really married to the man to whom she is shown as wife, Edwin Slarke.
All are wrongly recorded as 'Harke', which I believe to be an enumerator's error. In some hands an 'S' followed by an 'l' can look like an H. The H in the census entry is clearly not an 'Sl', but the household schedule may have been an Sl and mis-read as H.
Residence 1911 Bethnal Green Infirmary, Cambridge Road, Bethnal Green, London, England
Died Dec Q 1918 Whitechapel Reg Dist, London, England
- GRO ref: Slarke, Annie q4 1918 aged 58 Whitechapel RD 1c 481
Person ID I307539 All Last Modified 2 Sep 2023
Family Edwin SLARKE, b. Abt 1862, City of London, London, England
, d. Between 1911 and 1919 (Age ~ 49 years) Married Bef 1900 - No marriage found, I suspect they were just living together as though a married couple. No sign of Edwin on the scene when Annie's son William was born in 1891, so the relationship probably started between then and 1900, although in the 1911 census Annie said she had completed 25 years of marriage!
She also said she had had 5 children in the marriage, only one of whom was still living. I have only found two SLARK(E)s with a mother's maiden name of HOWARD, John who was with the family in 1901 but who died the next year, and his twin, who died soon after her birth.
It is most likely the other two were born and died between censuses, likely registered as HOWARDs without a mother's maiden name, so they would be very difficult to identify.
Married? Not married or evidence to suggest they didn't marry
