Edward made his mark, as did witness Elizabeth Cottom, probably his sister. Their apparent illiteracy (bride Jane signed) will doubtless have aided the transition from Gottam to Cottom, if it was not deliberate.
The 1911 census shows Edward and Jane had 7 children, 3 of whom had by then died.
