Obituary 2 Jan 1886 An Exceptionally Sad Death. - "An Exceptionally Sad Death. - In our obituary
to-day we record the death of Mr. William Holland
Berry, the fifth son of Mr. Thomas Berry, of South
Street Farm, Boughton, which took place under ex-
ceptionally painful circumstances. It appears that
the deceased, having spent the last fifteen years in
America, decided to come to England to enjoy a holi-
day with his many friends prior to going out to
Australia with the view of settling there with his
brother, Mr. Henry Berry. He accordingly left Bos-
ton, accompanied by his wife and five children, on
board the screw steamer "Missouri," but he was
taken ill during the passage, congestion of the brain
ensued, and on Saturday week, when almost within
sight of home, he died. Mr. B. G. Berry went to
Liverpool to meet his brother on his expected
arrival on Monday, but alas! only to receive his
corpse. The deceased was 37 years of age, and, as
already intimated he leaves a widow and five chil-
dren."

Obituary 2 Jan 1886 Sad Death of a Faversham Man. - "Sad Death of a Faversham Man. - We regret to
have to announce the death of Mr. William Holland
Berry, late of Yarmouth-ville, Maine, U.S.A., and
fifth son of Mr. Thomas Berry, of South Street Farm,
near Faversham. The distressing event occurred
under somewhat peculiar circumstances. Mr. Berry,
who was 38 years of age, left his home in Maine,
with his wife and five children. They sailed on
bard the s.s. Missouri, bound from Boston to
Liverpool, it being their intention to spend Christ-
mas with their friends in England, and then proceed
to Australia, where Mr. Berry was going to join his
brother, Mr. Henry Berry, of Melbourne (who was
recently in England). Providence willed otherwise.
Mr. B. G. Berry, of Newton-road, proceeded to
Liverpool to meet this brother, but on the arrival of
the steamer it transpired that he had died on the
19th inst. (two days before arrival) of congestion of
the brain. The remains of the deceased were brought
home, and interred in the burial ground at Boughton
Wesleyan Chapel on Dec. 23rd. Great sympathy is
felt, not only for the bereaved widow and orphans,
but for the family that has sustained so sudden
and unexpected a loss. Mr. Berry formerly resided
in Faversham, but went to America about 15 years
since."

With Boughton under Blean, William's birthplace, not very far from Bredgar, where Elizabeth was from (c. 13 miles), it seems that William and Elizabeth must have known each other before emigrating.
