Administration 18 Feb 1746/47 Consistory Court of the Bishop of Exeter, Exeter, Devon, England
- Miss Moger abstracted:
"Bond by Charles Eastley of Paington, gent., John Gay of same, blacksmith and Joseph Cox of the same husbandman in £30 dated 18 Feb. 20 Geo. II. 1746.
Charles to administer the goods of Richard Eastley of Marldon his brother, mariner? deceased (but died belonging to the Marlborough). Inv. to be exhibd. before 18 May.
Signat. of C. Eastley and the other bondmen and 3 seals covered with paper."
Miss Moger also notes:
"As far as I remember the signat. of this Chas. E. resembles that of Chas. E. will 1776. I cannot decipher seal against the signature."
No inventory survived when she looked at the documents.
I assume this bond will have been lost along with the wills in the WW2 bombing, so cannot take a look at the signatures or seals for myself, but from my research using PRs and other sources it is clear that the Charles who left a will in 1776 was living in Paignton by 1746, and he seems to be the only Charles who could be described as "of Paington, gent.", so I agree with Miss Moger's identification of Charles.
Occupation Malborough, Devon, England
Mariner - Miss Moger's abstract of a bond to his brother Charles when granted admon. for Richard includes "Richard Eastley of Marldon his brother, mariner?, he died belonging to the Marlborough". Royal Navy ships were not usually referred to with the prefix HMS at that time, so 'The Marlbrough' could be a merchant or RN ship.
I think most likely it was the ship launched as HMS St Michael in 1669 , renamed HMS Marlborough in 1706. In 1744 she was in the Battle of Toulon, 42 men were killed and 120 injured so it is likely that Richard was in this battle and it maybe when he died, or perhaps he was injured and died later of his wounds.
(there are lots of documents at TNA for this ship, including musters and paybooks, which should show if and when Richard was part of the crew; none yet looked at )
