"Anthony sonn of william Tare was baptized the xviiith day of July"

This seems a likely baptism for this Anthony, but as there had been at least one earlier one and there were several Tor families having children around the time Anthony father of Thomasine would have been born it is possible that the name was given to more than one. However, there is no equivalent gap in burials to that in the baptisms, and I have found no evidence of any other; certainly if there was more than one only one remained in Widecombe.

    • Described as having a 'messuage and tenement' in his possession it appears he was living, not just farming, at Sherbourn.

When he was churchwarden it was for his property in Sherbourn, and it is also referred to in an indenture of 1672 (DHC ref. 1508M/0/Moger/437) includes "AND ALL THAT tenement commonly called or known by the name of Broomeparkes now or late in the possession of ANTHONY TORR his Assignee or assignees AND ALL THAT messuage and tenement lying in Sherbourne village now or late in the tenure or possession of the late Anthony Torr"

I suspect that the last reference to Anthony as 'the late' should  read 'the said' - how could it be 'now' in his possession if he was known to be dead, and in any case a reference to someone indicating that they had died would usually be in the form 'Anthony Torr deceased'. Also, in addition to the unusual phraseology, I cannot find a burial before 1672 that could be the Anthony referred to. Also, as his son Anthony had a daughter baptised 1691 it would appear he had not been buried in 1687, and if this Anthony had died by 1672 I can't find an Anthony who could have been buried in 1687.

"Wyllyam Torr & Marye hext the xviith of nove[m]ber"There is no obvious reason for the gap between children's baptisms of 1606 and 1613; the lack of baptisms after could simply be Mary's age but would be expected anyway as there are no records surviving of baptisms after 1613 until 1624.
The brief abstract of William's will shows he left daughters Dunes and Grace besides those whose baptisms have been found. No other surname is recorded for either, suggesting that they were then unmarried; Grace is probably the 'Grace Tare' who married in 1646, so she may well have been born after 1613.
