John HAMMETT
Set As Default Person -
Name John HAMMETT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 16 Oct 1683 St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England
Gender Male Property From 18 May 1702 to 21 Sep 1711 Braddon Great Ring Newtake, Dartmoor, Devon, England
Manorial Court Admission and Surrender - John Hammett was admitted to a Newtake called 'Braddon Greate Ringe' on the surrender of John Nathan Tickle.
John, then described as John Hammett alias Cleave, surrendered it in 1711, following which his brother Robert was admitted to it.
As John died a few months later I wonder if he was already ill and that was why he surrendered it.
Also known as John CLEAVE Buried 10 Jan 1711/12 St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England

Andrew HAMETE, bur. 30 Apr 1618, St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England

Elizabeth LEAMAN, d. Yes, date unknown (Mother)
Notes - (Research):There were 2 Johns baptized in 1683, this one (i.e. the son of Andrew) and his first cousin, son of his uncle John.
The suffix 'junior' might in some of the events in the family I have suggested is that of this John may seem to some to suggest it was the son of John who had this family. However, it is widely found that in England junior was simply used to distinguish between 2 people with the same name in the same place, whether father and son, some other relationship, or even no apparent connection at all.
I am not certain which John had the family attached, but it seems probable to me it was this one as:
1. a manor court roll admission showing land passed from a John to Robert, and Robert was brother of this John;
2. the PR entries include a reference to John as 'of Cater', which is clearly associated with this branch of the Hammett / Cleave family (Andrew, probably this John's father though possibly his grandfather, and Robert his brother both seem to have lived there), though it is possible both Johns were of Cater.

, bur. 21 Oct 1701, St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England
(Age ~ 53 years) Mother Elizabeth LEAMAN, d. Yes, date unknown Married 24 Nov 1674 St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England
- Andrew and Elizabeth probably had one or two more children, in the nearly 8 year gap between known children baptised in 1675/6 and 1683. Unfortunately there is a gap of 2½ years in the baptisms in the registers from May 1679 to Nov 1681.
