    • From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 15 Jul 2021)
"14 Josepth Hamet had a basterd born in his house the 31th day of December cald by the name of Elizabeth Ally"
I am now sure if this means "Joseph Hamet had (a basterd born in his house)" i.e. a bastard was born in his house OR "(Joseph Hamet had a basterd) born in his house" i.e. Joseph Hamet fathered a bastard who was born in his house.
Whether or not Joseph was the father it seems likely that Elizabeth's mother was a servant living in the house.

There are no other entries for anyone with the surname Ally in the surviving PRs (to 1837), including no marriage or burial for Elizabeth or a potential mother. There were a few entries for people with the surname Allis or Allice, but in the C17th just one baptism, Giles the son of Thomas and Mary in 1672. The family do not appear to be long-term residents of Widecombe, put perhaps Giles had a sister who was Elizabeth's mother.
