  • Name Avice COCKWORTHIE
    Suffix [ONS gp] [Mother?]
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Abt 1485
    • From IPM for her father, where said to be aged 13 years and more.
After her father's death his wife Margaret remarried. I don't know if this was Margaret Champernoun, or if he had been married more than once; in addition
    Gender Female
    Died Aft 1551
    • Living when her husband wrote his will in 1545; living at the time of a Chancery Court case (C 1/1299/67-68 - not yet seen but I'm sure Alice refers to Avice).
Probably the Mistress Trevilian whose 3 daughters were left a bequest in the will of William Cavell (written and proved in 1554), so still living then. (The fact that they were named as her daughters rather than their father's daughters suggests she was living, their father was not)

    Family John TREVILIAN, Esq.,   b. Est 1489,   d. Abt 1546  (Age ~ 57 years)
    Married Bef 1500
    • Before a Chancery case dated between 1498 and 1500.

The Devon Vis, as shown by Vivian, indicates that John and Avice had a second son, Thomas, who lived at Yarnscombe.

However, no son Thomas is mentioned in his will or (so far as I can work out) in his IPM (so far I have only seen one version of the Dorset one, and the omission may be because lands had already been granted to him, as often happened as part of a marriage settlement - but even so I would have expected the lands to descend to Thomas before to his uncle or great uncles or their descendants, should his brother John have died was childless). This is what his John's father's will seems to expect - it only specifies that property should descend to his son Thomas or his brothers if there was no issue of his son John. Thomas left a large family when he died in 1565, so I don't believe he could have been a grandson of John *and Avice) but I wonder if he was John's brother.
Seeing the various IPMs may sort this out (none of the 1563 and 1577 IPMs seem to be transcribed in the Trevelyan Papers).
