    Notes
    • Richard Northmore disappears from records for England and Wales. After his mother's early death the family were split up. Richard's two youngest siblings were with their Northmore grandparent(s) in Sheepstor at the time of both the 1841 and 1851 censuses. The youngest, Walter, would subsequently join the marines, as Richard's other brother, Robert, had by 1851. Elizabeth seems to have married or be living as though married by 1851 (from an RN allotment list for Robert; I have not found Elizabeth in a census or a marriage for her). But what became or Richard?
I think he must be the Richard who was in Australia by 1855. At his death in 1900 his age was noted as 'about 75', which is right for this Richard. His first son bore his own name (which was also his father's), his second and 3rd had as first names Robert and Walter, the names of his brothers.
Had he too been in the RN? - maybe he 'ran' when it was in Australia. Or perhaps he joined the merchant service, and decided to settle in Australia, rather than take work on another voyage that would bring him back to England.

Most Richard Northmores of a similar age, or at least of an age they could have married in 1855 and lived until 1900, can be ruled out because there are records in England that clearly refer to them.

The only other who cannot be excluded is the Richard whose family I have recorded here, though neither his age nor the names used in his immediate family are as good a match. He was definitely in the merchant navy, though, and I have found no record for him in England after 1851, so it is possible it is he who settled in Australia.
(It was clearly NOT Richard the son of James NORTHMORE and Ann née SPURRELL, for whom there are clearly records in England beyond 1855).
