  • Name Stephen NUTE
    Suffix [ONS gp] [Father?]
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Bef 1623
    • As the protestation oath was to be taken by those aged 18 and over, the fact Stephen took it suggests he was born in or before 1623.
It seems likely he was the son of William, as he is listed immediately after him, and a William, probably the same one, was having children including in the years 1617 and 1623, consistent with having a son old enough to take the oath.

    • A list of those who took the Protestation Oath in Lewtrenchard in 1641 includes both a Stephen Nute and a William Nute.
(image on the parliament archive website here).

Stephen is listed immediately after William, suggesting they had taken the oath at the same time, and so were likely members of the same household. With a William having had children baptised in the parish 1617 and 1623 (at least) it seems likely it was that William, and that Stephen was another of his children.

    Notes
    • (Research):A few Court rolls for Lew Trenchard manor survive, one for 1589-90 and 3 for 1609-1614. Hopefully these will include one or more Nutes, and give an indication of whether there was just one Nute family in the manor at the time. (Lew Trenchard manor is the only manor listed under Lew Trenchard in the manorial documents register, but I don't know how well the manor matches to the parish). If there was only one family this increases the chance that Stephen was, as I suggest, son of William.
