A loving and devoted Mother
Lavinia Goatham
nee Penfold
who fell asleep 18th Nov 1972
Aged 75 Years
Mum worked hard for us
we loved her so
she will always be with us
wherever we go"
Siblings3 brothers and 5 sisters Notes - I am guessing Lavinia was dau of John and Naomi as her husband was described as "brother in law" of an Edward Penfold who seems to have been the son of John and Naomi.
In addition Naomi died in Faversham Reg dist, while Lavinia's husband was born there - so it is easy to see how there could have been the opportunity for George and Lavinia to meet.

Actual date given by Lavinia in an application for maintenance and custody, in 1939.
Separated From 29 Dec 1937 Petty sessions 5 Jul 1939 Faversham, Kent, England
Faversham Borough: application for custody and maintenance - In Faversham Times and Mercury and North-East Kent Journal of 8 July 1939 it was reported:
"Maintenance of Children
Wife refuses to go back to her husband
At the Faversham Borough Petty Ses-
sions on Wednesday Lavinia Goatham
[1?]8, Wallers Row, for the
custody and maintenance of two of her
children, aged 14 and 9. Mr. Wilfrid
Mowll appeared for the wife.
The wife stated that she was married
on August 4th, 1919. There were four
children of the marriage. She separated
from her husband on December 29th
1937. He paid her 15/- a week until
August, 1938. He then told her that he
would pay up if she had him back, but
she did not want him back owing to his
laziness. She had been receiving 15/- a
week parish relief.
Defendant said he could not understand
why his wife left him. He never drank
or sturck her. The house was open for
her to come back to. She simply said she
was tired, but that was absurd. He
thought he had been too easy. She had
taken all the furniture. He could not do
cherry picking as a wound in one of his
arms would not let him move ladders.
He might be able to do a little pea pick-
ing. What little he earnt was casual.
The Probation Officer (Mr. G. F.
Jacques) said he was convinced that Mrs.
Goatham was a good mother and that the
children were well looked after. He felt
the man had been done an injustice by
the Labour Exchange through someone
telling them something about the man.
Lavinia Goatham, a daughter, stated
that her father was lazy.
The Mayor said it was a very difficult
case to decide. This unhappy position
was as much to do with the wife as with
the husband. The only charge against
him was that he was lazy, but his terrible
wound might be partly responsible for
this, and they felt they could not order
him to pay more than 2/6 a week for
each child until they reached the age of
16.
Defendant said he would do his best to
pay the 5/- a week.
The wife said she could not accept that
amount.
The Clerk said she would have to abide
by the decision of the Bench.
The Bench remited the Court costs."
Reconciled Between 5 Jul 1939 and 29 Sep 1939 - The family were living together again by the time of the 1939 registration.
Whether this was because Lavinia could not manage on the amount awareded, or because of the war, or ...?
