Eric JORDAN
Set As Default Person -
Name Eric JORDAN Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 19 Jul 1914 27, Cockleshell Walk, Sittingbourne, Kent, England
- Although his parents were not married at the time Eric was born, his birth registration was indexed under both of their surnames:
GRO ref: Goatham, Eric q3 1914 Milton RD 2a 2013 - not in GRO online index
Also indexed as
Jordan, Eric q3 1914 Milton RD 2a 2014; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Goatham
When Eric was born his parents were not living together, and his mother at least was still living with her parents and siblings; it was at their home that Eric was born.
Details from birth registration (GRO register entry)
This shows that unusually both parents were informants of the birth. A father could only be named on the birth certificate of a child born outside of wedlock if he was present at the registration (or, of course, if there was a pretence that a couple were married when they were not). Eric may well never have been considered to have had the surname Goatham; the indexing is of a single registration entry, not due to a later change, and I think reflects caution by the indexers: they did not known which surname Eric would have. Given Lawrence's clear desire to be involved with his son, it seems to me surprising that it was another 6 months before he and Edith married - see their marriage for more consideration of this.
Actual date also from his father's WW1 papers as well as register entry.

Given Lawrence's clear desire to be involved with his illegitimate son Eric, it seems to me surprising that it was another 6 months before he and Edith married. Both were under age; I guess there was opposition from one or both sets of parents. Both were still underage when they married, and the ages were not 'adjusted' to disguise this, so the parents must have given permission then. What may or may not be significant is that Lawrence's father died the same quarter that Eric was born; maybe it was he who was opposed to the marriage.
