Elizabeth BECON
Set As Default Person -
Name Elizabeth BECON Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1596 - I have seen a date of 1599 on another tree, with Wittersham - source unknown, I was guessing baptism. TBC. But I have now seen Elizabeth referred to as "of Wittersham" (Thomas). Marriage records refer to people as "of ..." - but Elizabeth didn't marry. So do burial records - but she is buried in Canterbury Cathedral. So do wills, she left one and I have yet to see it. I guess that is the source, so I have removed it as her birthplace.
And I have changed date to 1596 - just so Elizabeth shows as older than Sybilla, which it's clear from her father's will that she was. (Year of birth of Sybilla could be wrong, though)
Gender Female Bequest 1620 In the will of her father Theodore
The will of Elizabeth's father, Theodore Becon
Elizabeth and her sister were each left £250 and "the residue of all my household stuffe, and
plate to be equally devided betwixt
them by my executor"Bequest 1629 In the will of her brother Anthony - "First I bequeath to my eldest Sister Elizabeth Beacon a hundred poundes, which she shall have paid her by John Inniver of Braysteed in five years Twentie poundes a yeare."
However, as Elizabeth died shortly after Anthony died, she would have benefitted little if at all; it is clear from her own will that what she was inheriting was not at that time clear.
Godparent to Edward Young, Elizabeth Aldry, Frances Somner, Thomas Murrey - It seems probable that Edward Young was the son of her 1st cousin Rachel Becon. I don't know of any family link to the others.
Will 2 Sep 1629 Written - Made and probate 1629. Seen register copy of the will.
Died Abt Feb 1629/30 [1] - Resident in the parish of St. Alphage, Canterbury when she died.
Buried 3 Feb 1629/30 Christ Church Cathedral, Canterbury, Kent, England
- Transcript of the registers shows burial as of "Elizabeth Beacon, the daughter of Doctor Beacon"
In Edward Hasted's "The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent: Volume 11" (1800) he gives information about the monuments in Canterbury Cathedral, pp. 383-424.
This includes:
"In the middle space, a gravestone for ...; for Theodorus Beacon, M. D. and his unmarried daughter Elizabeth; he died in 1729." I believe this should read "she died in 1629"! I think this may refer to the middle space of the North aisle, to which Hasted had previously referred. Enquiring in 2011 it seems (not surprisingly) that the stone no longer survives.
Hasted also mentions that in the wills of the "Prerogative-office in Canterbury" he found some directions for burials in the Cathedral; these include "Elizabeth, daughter of Theodore Beacon, M. D. of Canterbury, in 1629, and directed a tomb stone to be laid there, with an inscription, shewing that her father and brother were there buried". Looking at the will (register copy of it) she directed a tomb stone should have an inscription "testefying that my father and my selfe were there
interred" - no mention of her brother, who I guess was probably buried in Suffolk.
