Married Abt 21 Feb 1643/44 Kent, England
- The marriage licence shows the marriage was to be at Wye or Crundale (acc. to Cowper's transcripts). But I have not found an entry in the PRs (KFHS transcripts) for either parish.
And in Wye a widow Elizabeth Short married a James Alexander in 1645 so did Basil marry this Elizabeth, or did the marriage fail to take place?
Short was a very uncommon name in Wye, and the burial of Mark in 1643 was the only burial of any Short in the Parish, 1538-1865, though with Elizabeth such a common name it's not impossible that there was another.
All the children of Basil and Elizabeth shown here are shown as such in Burke's Landed Gentry, but there is no baptism information for any of them.
So where did the researcher get the info - a will that isn't mentioned?
There clearly was a Robert who was of Mersham when he married, born about 1643. Burke also shows Basil as having bought land in Mersham; if this is correct then it seems quite likely that he was a son of Basil, but Basil's brother Thomas had lands in Mersham so maybe Robert was his son (with his second wife - unlikely to have been born 1643 but could have legitimately been born 1645)?
The burial of Basil, shown as the son of Basil, could be the burial of Thomas's son Basil (son with his 3rd wife) - I don't know what became of him, or even the burial of this Basil, if he didn't marry.
But many records are not online, and from this period of those that are, not all are legible. About 1640-1660 many are missing due to the Civil War and protectorate; I don't know enough to dismiss Burke's data on Basil's family at present (though the Becon tree published by Burke's is clearly wrong or dubious in some other areas).
