This picture probably gives a better impression of what my ancestors in Bishopsbourne in the C18th would have known than would visiting the church today!
View from the East (altar) end towards the tower, c. 1840, with box pews, a 2 or 3 decker pulpit (the one bequeathed by Richard Hooker) and Hooker's memorial. The latter has since been moved due to the installation of an organ.

Patrixbourne burial register, age given as 72 - implies born 1782/3; dth cert shows age as 69, I suspect she was bapt as was usual aged a few months and was born 1787 or 1788, and so aged 67 or 68

    • Seen the PR entry.
Though the entry generally referred to Stephen Lucas he signed his name as Stephen Lukus!
Mary made her mark, as did her sister Martha as a witness.

The other witness was J. Saffery, who was a witness to most marriages at St. Mary Northgate at this time and so probably no connection to the family.
